Kano gov defends land allocations, says it will reduce housing deficit

Kano State Governor, Abba Yusuf, has said that his administration’s allocation of plots of land to citizens is aimed at reducing the housing deficit, creating wealth for families, and laying a solid foundation for a better future.

This was contained in a statement released by the governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Mustapha Muhammad, a copy of which was made available to PUNCH Online on Sunday.

Recall that the recent decision by Yusuf to allocate 1,540 plots of land and N100 million to leaders of the All Progressives Congress Polling Unit Supporters Association, otherwise known as Yan’akwati, came under strong condemnation from residents, who described the gesture as a bribe ahead of the 2027 general elections.

According to the statement, the governor made the disclosure while distributing title documents for plots of land to his Senior Special Assistants, Senior Special Reporters, Special Assistants, Special Reporters, and Personal Assistants under the supervision of the Ministry of Land and Physical Planning at the Coronation Hall, Government House, Kano, on Saturday.

“Receiving an allocation of a plot of land in a government layout is not an ordinary achievement.

“This programme is not simply about the allocation of plots of land; it is about reducing the housing deficit, empowering our people through property ownership, creating wealth for families, and providing young people, women, and vulnerable groups with a solid foundation upon which they can build a better future”, the statement quoted the governor, who was represented by the Secretary to the State Government, Umar Ibrahim, as saying.

He added that the present administration believes leadership is not measured by the promises it makes but by the promises it keeps, stressing that the administration was fulfilling a promise it made to the beneficiaries.

Yusuf commended the beneficiaries for supporting his administration from the campaign period to the present and appealed to them to consider themselves ambassadors of his administration by continuing to enlighten the public about the programmes and projects being undertaken by the government.

In his remarks, the Commissioner for Land and Physical Planning, Alhaji Abduljabar Umar, said the number of plots allocated by the Governor Yusuf administration surpassed those allocated by the previous administrations of former Governors Rabiu Kwankwaso and Abdullahi Ganduje.

He urged the beneficiaries not to sell the allocated plots but to keep them for future use.

Some of the beneficiaries, who spoke on behalf of the others, expressed gratitude to the Governor and promised to work assiduously to ensure his re-election in the 2027 general elections.
