The NOVA 2026 graduating class of Babcock University has broken ground for a ₦45 million, 324-seater pavilion at the institution’s Iperu campus and commenced the renovation of five gazebos on the main campus as part of its legacy projects to improve sports and recreational infrastructure.

The projects were inaugurated during a groundbreaking ceremony led by Babcock University President and Vice Chancellor, Afolarin Ojewole, a professor, alongside the Vice President for Student Development and class sponsor, Tolani Williams, a professor; class sponsor, Bukola Alao; co-sponsors, Muyiwa Oyinloye, a pastor and Emmanuel Ikeagbu.

Representing the graduating class at the ceremony were the Vice President of the Babcock College of Computing and Engineering (BCCE), Samuel Owoeye, and the Vice President of Babcock University College of Distance and e-Learning (BUCODEL), Favour Ohuche.

VC stresses quality, durability

Speaking at the event, the vice chancellor said the university would prioritise quality over speed in executing the project to ensure it stands the test of time.

We are not going to rush to commission these projects but be rest assured that the job is well done and delivered. The class members can come even five or 10 years after to see that their giving made a big difference, he said.

Describing the initiative as an example of responsible stewardship by students, he added: This is a testament of good professionalism. While others destroy their school, Babcock students build theirs.

The Pastor, Mr Oyinloye explained that the new pavilion expands on an earlier structure constructed in 2019, which was damaged during a storm in 2023.

He said the graduating class resolved not only to replace the damaged facility but also to improve on the original design.

Providing an update on the project, Seun Omotosho, an engineer, said the contract was initially valued at ₦45 million but noted that additional improvements could increase the scope of the work.

The initial award was at ₦45 million but we are likely to do more with some additional things that are going to be put in place, he said.

Gazebo renovation complements legacy project

Beyond the pavilion, the graduating class is also funding the renovation of five gazebos on the university’s main campus, located between the Samuel Akande Activity Hall and the cafeteria.

According to the university, the upgraded gazebos will provide students with improved spaces for relaxation, interaction and outdoor activities.

The university said the pavilion and renovated gazebos are expected to strengthen recreational infrastructure on campus, providing enhanced spaces for sports, outdoor events and leisure while serving future generations of students.
